In Year 2, we read ‘I’m Australian too’ by Mem Fox and learnt that many families come to live in Australia for so many different reasons. Each student thought about their own family’s story, drew a picture and did a piece of writing about it. NEW STAFF // Welcome Bree Wolstencroft to our primary department. Bree will be working with Year 3 on Wednesdays as well as Friday K-6 sport, she brings with her a wealth of experience, particularly in the Sport/Physical Education subject, and will be working with Tom Mansfield this year. We’re all excited that she has been able to come over to Heritage Sydney and are looking forward to working with and learning from her experience.

THE BIG FRIENDLY GIANT // Year 4 have been reading Roald Dahl’s “The BFG” this term and have been fascinated by the funny way he speaks and all the amazing and hilarious things in his giant world. They created some dream jars, containing what they want to be and how they want to influence the world as they grow older. They also measured themselves and then divided their height to show how tall they would be standing next to him if he entered our classroom. TRAINING STRINGS // The 2024 Year 3 Training Strin

TRAINING STRINGS // The 2024 Year 3 Training String group have started a new tutor method book called ‘Tricky Fingers’! This method is a holistic way of learning, with students also given weekly theory sheets for homework. The methodology is composed by Timo Jarvela. His initial inspiration came after attending a Colour Strings conference in Helsinki, Finland, in 2008 where he saw how a unique approach to teaching beginners (and older string players) could produce amazing results. He returned home to Brisbane keen to try and adapt some of the concepts into the context of his own teaching of heterogeneous string groups. The material he wrote gradually developed into a sequenced method for teaching first year string players.

MATHS // In Maths year 3 are looking at measurement. In this activity they had to build a structure (either vertical or horizontal) which they estimated to be 1m. Once each group was finished we used the metre ruler to see how closely they had estimated. They all then sketched and labelled their towers. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek

VISUAL ARTS // In Dr. Seuss’s ‘My Many Colored Days’, each day is depicted through a colour which
symbolises a unique emotion. We explored the correlation between colours and our emotions, discussing how we can experience multiple feelings at the same time. Students expressed their emotions through art, using oil pastels to skillfully mix and blend colours together on paper. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek

SCIENCE // In a Year 9 experiment, students explor

SCIENCE // In a Year 9 experiment, students explored the effect of antacid tablets on pH levels in hydrochloric acid (HCl/ Gastric acid) using a universal indicator. By dissolving antacid tablets in HCl and observing the resulting pH changes, they investigated the neutralising properties of these tablets. This hands-on activity provided students with a practical understanding of how antacids work to alleviate acidity in the stomach. Through this experiment, students gained valuable insights into pH measurement and acid-base reactions.
In a Year 9 practical investigation, students explored the interaction between iodine and starch. By applying iodine solution to various leaves and subsequently heating them, followed by treatment with methylated spirit, they observed a notable chemical reaction. This practical activity allowed students to observe the characteristic blue-black colour change indicating the presence of starch.
Through this experiment, students gained insights into photosynthesis, as well as the chemical properties of starch and its detection methods. #heritagecollegesydney #secondaryschool #kempscreek

SENIOR GEOGRAPHY // Last Monday we went to Chowder Bay to study the kelp forests by collecting data to fill out a booklet and also by going snorkelling! I saw fish, a stingray and lots of sea urchins, and learnt how to equalise the snorkel when duck diving. It was an
amazing day, the highlight probably being getting to hold a sea urchin. RR (Year 11)
On Monday our Senior Geography class visited Chowder Bay in Mosman. We were able to go snorkelling where we spotted many fish, a stingray, found old glass bottles and held an urchin. It was a great day and we all had lots of fun! EL (Year 11). #heritagecollegesydney #secondaryschool #kempscreek

FOOD TECHNOLOGY // Last week, the Year 9/10 Food Technology class took part in an incursion. The focus of this incursion was for students to examine food service an catering, and to understand the processes that Wheely Gourmet food truck undertake to prepare safe and appealing food.
